Funds sought for work on railway line

Bangalore Dec. 11. The secretary-general of the Janata Dal (United), M.P. Nadagouda, has urged the State Government to immediately release the funds for the conversion of the Gadag-Bijapur metre gauge line to broadgauge. Work on this stretch of the railway line linking Hubli with Sholapur has come to a stop since the Government has not released Rs. 61 crores which it had promised the Railways. The Railways and the State Government have undertaken this project on a 50:50 equity participation basis and the work is slated to be completed next year. Dr. Nadagouda said the people of several north Karnataka districts were affected since the railway link had been disrupted and the roads were also in a state of disrepair. Further the Rs. 638-crore relief package announced by the previous Government for the development of the old and new Bagalkot towns was still to be implemented. He also demanded reduction in sales tax on petroleum products and said petrol and diesel were costlier in the State owing to the nearly 25 per cent sales tax. The Centre had recently written to the State Governments to reduce the sales tax on petroleum products but Karnataka had not considered the suggestion. The State Government should also lift the ban on the recruitment of schoolteachers. Dr. Nadagouda said the first meeting of the new office-bearers of the State unit of the JD(U) will be held here on Tuesday. The meeting will discuss the prevailing political situation in the State, ways of strengthening the party base, launching a membership drive and also a fund collection campaign.

Rs. 60 crores for sericulture

DAVANGERE DEC. 11. An amount of Rs. 60 crores has been earmarked for the State in the coming year for sericulture promotion, said the Director of the Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute, S.B. Dandin, here today. In an informal chat with presspersons, Dr. Dandin, who was here to inaugurate a seminar on sericulture, said Rs. 39 crores was sanctioned to the State the previous year, which had been enhanced to Rs. 60 crores. The State Government had to provide a matching grant, he said. To a question, he said the country's requirement of silk is 25,000 tonnes, whereas the production is around 15,000 tonnes. There is a shortage of 10,000 tonnes, which is being met through imports from China. In order to meet the domestic demand for silk, the Government is encouraging production with subsidies, imparting technical know-how to farmers and so on. Dr. Dandin said a large quantity of Chinese silk is being imported illegally from countries such as Nepal and Bangladesh at a comparatively lower price. This is driving down the demand for Indian silk. The Union Government is taking measures to curb this illegal import of silk from neighbouring countries, Dr. Dandin said.

Support for Jayakar Jerome

Bangalore Dec. 11. People from various walks of life, under the leadership of B.G. Koshy of Bangalore Citizens' Forum, today submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, urging the State Government to stop what they called the harassment of the former Commissioner of the Bangalore Development Authority, Jayakar Jerome. They said Mr. Jerome should be treated with the dignity and respect that is due not just to him but also any government officer. "As citizens of Bangalore we are not only concerned but also extremely apprehensive and would like to see transparency in this entire episode." They said they extended full support to Mr. Jerome and were of the view that there was nothing wrong in him seeking the permission of the State Government to prosecute the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, who had levelled allegations against him. Instead of appreciating the courage of the officer, he was being threatened and intimidated, they alleged. Till today, the Department for Minorities Welfare to which Mr. Jerome was posted has not been constituted. It should be remembered that it was Mr. Jerome who transformed the Bangalore Development Authority into one of the most efficient government institutions, they added.

Temple take-over opposed

Udupi Dec. 11. The noted scholar and litterateur Vidyavachaspati Bannanje Govindacharya has opposed any move to take over Sri Krishna Temple. He was speaking at a meeting of Sri Krishna Mukhyaprana Bhakta Vrinda to chalk out the `Maha Bhajan' programme on December 17 to oppose the take-over of the temple and to support the construction of `Kanaka Gopura,' here today. Mr. Govindacharya said Udupi was the place that accorded the highest respect to Kanakadasa. The people of Udupi were the first to recognise Kanakadasa as an avatar of God. Kanakadasa was a universal man who could not be limited to any caste or community. Everybody should support the construction of the `Kanaka Gopura.' The take-over of the Sri Krishna Temple would render it into a "drama company." The Government should stick to its primary job of administering the State, he said. Vishwapriya Tirtha Swamiji of Paryaya Admar Math said devotees should participate in the `Maha Bhajan' programme by making use of the `talas' as was done by Kanakadasa. Intellectuals who criticised the offering of a diamond vest, a gold chariot and a silver chariot to Lord Krishna as a dead investment were not averse to approaching the Lord when they were in trouble. Little did they realise that the proceeds from the chariot and diamond vest `sevas' were being used for running the `Chinnara Santharpane' midday meal schemes for students of aided schools and other social purposes, the swamiji said. Janardhan Kanchan, secretary of Malpe Fishermen's Association, welcomed the gathering. Dayananda Suvarna proposed a vote of thanks. K. Raghupati Bhat, MLA; Shivappa Kanchan, president of Malpe Fishermen's Association; U.P. Upadhyaya of Sidha Samadhi Yoga; Bhuvanendra Kediyoor, convener of the Vrinda; Raghavendra Acharya of the VHP; Arvind Holla, Manohar Shetty and Gopal Kundar were present.
