Body found in river

THRISSUR DEC. 11. An unidentified youth was found dead in Chalakkudy River this morning. The police said the hands and feet of the body were found tied and there was a deep cut in the neck. The police said the person appeared to be aged about 30 and the articles recovered from the body indicated that he was hailing from Tamil Nadu. A telephone bill recovered from the pocket of the pants of the deceased indicated that he had made a telephone call from a booth at Sinkiri in Salem district. A name Saravanan is written on bill. A note in Tamil saying that a lady called Kupushanthi was responsible for the murder has also been recovered from the body.

Seminar on human rights

ALAPPUZHA DEC. 11. The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind will organise a seminar on Development and Human rights at the Alappuzha Town Hall on December 12 at 3 p.m. The seminar is being organised as a part of the national level human rights campaign being organised by the Jama-ath-Islami, said the organisers. K. N. Panicker, historian and human rights worker, will inaugurate the seminar. The Jama-Ath-Islami State vice-president, T. Arif Ali, will preside over the function.

The State committee member of the Solidarity movement, T. K. Farroq, will present a paper. Those who will speak include the CPI State assistant secretary, Panniyan Ravindran, A. Achuthan, Ecologist, head of international relations of Mahatma Gandhi University, A. K. Ramakrishnan and C. R. Neelakantan, environmental activist.

NGO Sangh meet begins

PALAKKAD DEC. 11. The 26th State conference of the Kerala NGO Sangh was inaugurated by B. Rajagopal, Tamil Nadu State President of Bharatheeya Mazdoor Sangh, at the Town Hall here on Saturday.

The R.S.S regional secretary, R. Venugopal, delivered the keynote address.

The meeting was presided over by NGO Sangh State President, M.S. Shyamkumar.

People's convention organised

The agriculture scientist Dr. Mohammed Bavappa has said that the destruction of Ananganmala Hills in Ottappalam will cause environmental problems in the area as it is a major water shed of the Bharathapuzha.

He was inaugurating the people's convention organised by Bharathapuzha Samrakshana Samithy at N.S.S. Training College in Ottapalam on Saturday.

The Samithy Secretary Indanur Gopi presided over the meeting.

The organising secretary, Dr. P.S. Panicker, presented a report on the mass agitation being held to protect the Bharathapuzha.

Full accreditation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM DEC. 11. Parasyavedi Advertising of Kollam has been accorded full accreditation by the Indian Newspaper Society (INS). Its chief executive, Ashok Ramachandran, said it is the only agency to get INS accreditation in the district.

Assumes charge

Ramesh Chandra has assumed charge as General Manager of Southern Railway. A B.E. (Double Gold medallist) from the Aligarh Muslim University, Mr. Chandra joined the Indian Railways Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE) as a probationer in 1970. Prior to joining as General Manager, Southern Railway, he was Additional General Manager, Eastern Railway. He has visited Japan, Switzerland, France, U.S. and U.K. in connection with design of DC EMU, three-phase locomotive and other assignments.

Radio programme

The Thiruvananthapuram Station of All India Radio will broadcast a special programme produced and presented by children in connection with the Children's International Broadcasting Day from 8.30 a.m. to 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Krishnaswamy arrives

The former MP M. Krishnaswamy, who has been appointed chairman of the Pradesh Election Authority by the All India Congress Committee reached here today. He held preliminary discussions with the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, and general secretaries Mullappally Ramachandran and Kodikkunnil Suresh at Indira Bhavan. He met the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, and the former Chief Minister, A.K. Antony; he spoke to the Chief Minister over the telephone.

Elected

Jose Kurien Kattookaran has been elected president of the Kerala Gazetted Officers Union. N. Aravindakshan is the new general secretary.

120 fishermen stranded

As many as 120 fishermen were reportedly stranded in the deep sea off Ponnani in Malappuram district, police said here today. The fishermen had ventured into the sea yesterday from Ponnani in three country crafts. However, they went further into the sea in pursuit of a good catch. As they could not haul up the large catch, the fishermen were forced to halt in the sea. All of them were safe and the Coast Guard was informed, they said. - UNI

PDP campaign

KASARAGOD DEC. 11. The People's Democratic Party (PDP) working president, C.K. Abdul Azeez, will inaugurate its campaign with the slogan, `Justice for Maudany', at a function here tomorrow. It is aimed at highlighting the injustice allegedly meted out to the PDP leader who has been detained in jail for years together.

7 pilgrims hurt in accident

PATHANAMTHITTA DEC. 11. Seven pilgrims from Tirupati sustained minor injuries when the Tata Sumo in which they were travelling plunged into a ditch near Nilackal on the Mannarakulanji-Pampa main trunk road to Sabarimala today. The injured have been identified as Chandra Reddy (42), Ramakrishna (27), Raja Reddy (52), Dasrath (42), Mohan Reddy (44), Venkitesh (42) and Ramakumar Reddy (40). They were returning to Tirupati after holy darshan at Sabarimala. They have been admitted to the Pathanamthitta General Hospital.
