MADURAI, DEC.11. The `firebrand' poet Subramania Bharathiar's birth anniversary was celebrated with fervour here today and his contribution to the freedom struggle was eulogised by distributing books containing the verses he had authored. Members from various walks of life garlanded his statue located on the premises of the Sethupathy Boys' Higher Secondary School. The Amutha Surabi Kalai Mandram organised a unique event at the Sethupathy Boys' Higher Secondary School. Students of the Madurai Corporation Pandia Vellalar Middle School dressed themselves as Mahakavi Bharathi and his spouse, Chellammal and congregated in front of his statue. They sang his patriotic songs. Besides distributing books containing the poet's poetry free of cost to the students on the occasion, the mandram members, led by their president, V. Balakrishnan, garlanded the statue of the poet. The mandram's organising secretary, N. Suresh Babu, the All India Advocates Association district secretary, K. Samithurai, garlanded the statue. Members of the Tamil Nadu Janata Dal, led by its state general secretary, K. John Moses, offered floral tributes to the poet at the Sethupathy Boys' Higher Secondary School. The Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Association secretary, N. Sridhar, the district president, A. N. Santharam, the `Kaviarasu' Kannadasan Narpani Mandram members, led by their president, R. Chockalingam, and the secretary M. Chandran, garlanded the statue too.
