MADURAI, DEC.11. The `firebrand' poet Subramania Bharathiar's birth anniversary was celebrated with fervour here today and his contribution to the freedom struggle was eulogised by distributing books containing the verses he had authored.

Members from various walks of life garlanded his statue located on the premises of the Sethupathy Boys' Higher Secondary School.

The Amutha Surabi Kalai Mandram organised a unique event at the Sethupathy Boys' Higher Secondary School. Students of the Madurai Corporation Pandia Vellalar Middle School dressed themselves as Mahakavi Bharathi and his spouse, Chellammal and congregated in front of his statue.
