This Day That Age
The Congress Party in the Travancore-Cochin Legislature on December 12 decided by an overwhelming majority to withdraw its support to and cooperation with the minority PSP Government in the State. A 1500-word resolution to this effect was moved by the party leader, Mr. Panampilli Govinda Menon, at a convention of the members of the old and new Travancore-Cochin PCC, the Presidents of the DCCs and Congress legislators, and was passed. The decision of the Congress, the largest single party in the 118-member Travancore-Cochin Legislative Assembly, to withdraw its support to the PSP Ministry leaves the Government without a majority in the Assembly. The PSP Ministry, with a party strength of 19, assumed office on March 16 this year, after the elections in the State had given majority to no party. The Congress Party decided to extend general and responsive co-operation to the PSP Ministry. It is also not known whether the Ministry would tender its resignation immediately or wait for the verdict of the State Assembly which is scheduled to meet on January 25. However, the acting General Secretary of the State PSP was quoted as saying earlier this week that the Ministry would not resign immediately if the Congress decided to withdraw its support, but would resign only if it was defeated in the Assembly.
