M.S. is immortal

Sir, — Someone as blessed as M.S. cannot pass away. M.S. was and is a manifestation of the blessed voice that I hear at least twice every day. Be it in the sublime rendition of Vishnu Sahasranamam or the soulful rendition of Rajaji's Kurai onrum illai, or in those countless serene and mellifluous kritis, M.S. continues to live with me and with all her adoring fans.

R. Venkatesan Iyengar,
Hyderabad

Sir, — The lord, it seems, could not wait to meet her in person. To me, she became synonymous with archana because each note rendered by her was sanctified by her conviction and not with mere mastery over the mundane theory of music. Several composers have begged the lord to help them get out of this samsaara. He could not oblige them till M.S. gave her voice to the lines.

S.V. Krishna,
Visakhapatnam, A.P.

Sir, — Critics ran out of adjectives and devised metaphors to describe M.S.' voice. They compared it with a rope of gold, a chain of coruscating crystals and a string of spring jasmines. M.S. carried her musical prowess with such humility and aplomb that one is reminded of the saying vidya vinaya sampannah (Vidya goes hand in hand with humility).

T.S. Pattabhi Raman,
Coimbatore, T.N.

* * * Sir, — The modulating vibrations of M.S.' vocal chord which reverberated at the United Nations and won the appreciation of no less a person than Mahatma Gandhi remained intact till the end. The Government should come forward to establish a university in memory of this great legend.

M.N. Srinivasan,
Chennai

* * * Sir, — Her performance at the U.N. is an unforgettable event that made India proud. She was one among the greats of the country who united not only Indians but the whole world by her enchanting, divine music.

V.S. Ganeshan,
Bangalore

Sir, — Tamil Nadu has always been proud of M.S. The younger generation in particular has drawn inspiration from her. To perpetuate her memory, cultural organisations, particularly the music sabhas, should come together and put up a befitting memorial to her.

Seethalakshmi Nagarajan,
Chennai

Sir, — She was one of the best gifts from the great city of Madurai to the music world. Her voice, grace, knowledge and charity touched the soul. As Kamban said, death can do no damage to the achiever of excellence.

S. Srimoolanathan,
Irvine, California

Sir, — M.S.' death is a great loss to musicians, music lovers and the devout. Her contribution to charitable causes will be remembered forever.

V. Umamaheswaran,
Chennai

Sir, — M.S. is no longer with us. But she will continue to be with us and with generations to come.

Radha Raman Gargeya,
Sudbury, Massachusetts

Sir, — This is the occasion to remember M.S. not only for her contribution to music but also to the world of humanity.

I remember how she raised money for the Kshatriya Vidyalaya in Virudhunagar through special concerts.

S. Gokul,
Chennai

Sir, — M.S. was an embodiment of devotion, and music transcended the earth through her.

B.V. Prasanna Kumar,
Hyderabad

Sir, — M.S. Subbulakshmi's contribution to bhakti, to me, was much greater than all the teachings and preachings of saints and seers.

K.S. Rajeswari,
Hyderabad
