Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, DEC. 12. R. V. Janakiraman, Leader of the Opposition and convener of the Pondicherry unit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has called upon the Pondicherry Government to ensure that privately managed professional colleges do not violate the conditions laid down by the Government while granting recognition. In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Janakiraman said a medical college had obtained affiliation from a deemed university outside Pondicherry. How could a college functioning here and enjoying all the facilities provided by the Pondicherry Government affiliate itself with a neighbouring State's university, he asked. The Government should not permit the institution to function here and should immediately withdraw the recognition granted to it when it started functioning with affiliation to the Pondicherry University, he said.
Protests
Stating that the DMK would launch a series of protests to prevent the `anti-student' style of functioning of the private colleges here, Mr. Janakiraman said the very purpose of letting private players set up institutions (with affiliation to Pondicherry University) here with a package of incentives and facilities was to ensure that local students had the statutorily prescribed quota of seats as government-sponsored candidates in professional colleges. This facility would be denied to local students should the college get affiliation from a university outside Pondicherry, he said.
