NEW DELHI, DEC. 12. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today condoled the death of the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Syed Mir Quasim. The country has lost one of its pre-eminent political personalities, who symbolised the ethos of secular nationalism, she said in a message. He was a fine symbol of India's composite culture. He lived a simple and austere life and when the occasion demanded, sacrificed his post as chief minister in 1975 in the larger cause of the State and the country. The Syed was a devout Congressman throughout his life, though he had friends and well-wishers across the political spectrum. "He had endeared himself to all by his values, his style of living and working. The Congress and the country mourn the passing away of this great patriot."
