NEW DELHI, DEC. 12. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, L.K. Advani, today warned his party men about the party's declining image and asked them to pull up their socks. "The people now believe that we are going the Congress way. The impression is gaining ground that the `Congressisation' of the party has begun. This is not good news for us," Mr. Advani told a meeting of the National Executive of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha, the party's youth wing. Mr. Advani's remarks assume significance in the light of the public spat between the second-rung leaders of the BJP. "The people reposed their faith in us because they believed that we were a party with a difference. However, over the last few years that uniqueness has been eroded and now they have begun to liken us to the Congress," he said. He called on the youth wing to restore the party's image by reaffirming its commitment to the core values of "discipline and personal integrity." He also voiced his disappointment at the manner in which the youth wing had demanded seats during the recent elections. Mr. Advani said that for people who had devoted a lifetime to carve a niche for the party, the party being likened to the Congress, known for its sycophancy, was not something to be proud of. "... One of the reasons for our electoral reverses maybe that the distinction is getting blurred," he said.
