WELLINGTON, DEC. 12. New Zealand cricket coach John Bracewell has defended his players against stinging criticism contained in a leaked e-mail from his brother, former Test fast bowler Brendon Bracewell. Writing to former New Zealand captain Ken Rutherford, Brendon Bracewell said the New Zealand players were too ``coach-dependent'' and faked illness to avoid hard work. The e-mail, which was leaked to several New Zealand newspapers, described fast bowler Ian Butler as ``pea-hearted'' and selfish and said the New Zealanders frequently sought soft options in practice. Portions of the e-mail suggested Brendon Bracewell had inside knowledge of selection issues. He hinted Butler's tendency to ``infect the whole team with his misery'' explained his non-selection for New Zealand's Tests against Australia this month. ``This is the sort of character Johnny doesn't want in the team,'' Brendon Bracewell said.
