BANGALORE, DEC. 12. Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has launched a project to sell power-saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and 36-watt fluorescent tube lights to its 16-lakh domestic customers in Bangalore city. The project, "Bescom Efficient Lighting Programme (BELP)", has been prepared with help from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and the Washington-based International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC). Philips, Osram and Asian will supply the tube lights and CFL. The Energy Secretary, Dilip Rau; the USAID-India Mission Director (Acting), William Martin; the IIEC President, Nitin Pandit; the Bescom Managing Director, Bharat Lal Meena; and the Bescom Director (Technical), V.M. Chandre Gowda, were present at a function got up to launch the programme here on Friday. The project will be on up till mid-May. Bescom may extend the programme to other towns and cities, if there is good response to the programme. USAID is working with Bescom to set up a model distribution circle at Doddaballapur. An 11-watt CFL uses 1.32 units of energy a month while an ordinary 60-watt bulb requires 7.2 units a month. While the CFL can last 6,000 to 8,000 hours, the ordinary bulb has a lifespan of 1,000 hours.
Steps to get CFL
Go to any Soujanya counter of Bescom, show your latest bill and receipt, and collect a voucher. Present the filled up voucher (the voucher has to be signed by the Bescom customer on whose name the installation is) at any retail outlet to buy CFL from any of the three companies. You will get a discount of 15 per cent on the original price of Rs. 150 per CFL. No discount or instalment scheme is offered on energy-efficient tube lights. Bescom allows its customers to pay for CFL in nine instalments. The instalment amount will be included in the monthly bill. A maximum of five CFLs will be sold per installation.
