Reporter's Diary

Ban on online lotteries

Sir, — The High Court recently sent a notice to the Government after lottery agents filed a petition that a large number of their employees were unemployed due to the ban on online lotteries.

Any sensible person knows that a lottery, whether online or printed, is only a game of luck and only a fraction of the number of people who buy tickets can win. The quality of life of the family members of the persons addicted to lotteries normally gets affected. Some even take loans to buy the lottery tickets. Hence it is foolish on the part of Government to depend on lotteries for revenue. It is time that all types of lotteries are banned.

Streetlights

Sir, — Despite reminders, a few streetlights are being switched on and switched off by connecting or disconnecting live wires. This is a dangerous practice and should be stopped. The service provider should immediately provide proper switches to operate the lights.

The time has also come to introduce light-dependent switches so that a person need not manually turn the lights on or off. This will help save manpower and reduce expediture.

The use of solar power to light up traffic lights and streetlights should also be taken up on top priority to cut costs.

Shift bus stop

Sir, — There is an urgent need to attend to the growing traffic jam and the haphazard movement of traffic at the Bommanahalli Junction on Hosur Road. The absence of automatic time-set signalling system is causing problems for motorists on the Bommanahalli-Begur Road. The junction is also being used as a bus stop for local as well as outstation buses. It is imperative that the bus stop is shifted from near the junction and an automatic time-set signalling system is installed.

This is essential till the project to connect Hosur Road to Electronic city through an over-bridge is completed.

Open BMTC office

Sir, — The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) constructed an office and a hotel building next to the Chennammanakere bus stop. Though the construction is complete, the office has not been opened.

As there is no office, the busses do not stop at the bus stand. Commuters are put to a lot of hardship and have to wait for a long time for buses. It is requested that the office be opened immediately as it would ensure that the buses stop at the bus stop.
