Reporter's Diary

Acquire land

Sir, — The airport authorities require at least 120 acres to construct the new terminal for the Trivandrum International Airport, according to press reports. Though the Union Ministry gave the nod a few years back, the project has not taken off due to non-availability of land. So far, the Government has managed to acquire only 30.5 acres. All political parties have agreed to support the project. The only opposition that the authorities are facing is from local residents. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, should look into the matter and take necessary steps to acquire the land.

Clear the road

Sir, — The Kunjalummoodu over bridge and Karamana-Poojappura road have not been cleared of the materials used for the repair work, posing problems to pedestrians and motorists. Ideally, repair work, if any, should be completed immediately. The divisional manager of the Railways, Thiruvananthapuram, should look into the matter.

New bus terminal

Sir, — The State Government has decided to construct a KSRTC bus terminal at Eenchakkal, in Thiruvananthapuram, for long distance buses. It is difficult for buses from areas such as Kottayam to reach the terminal without stopping at the Thampanoor terminal. The long distance buses have to stop at Thampanoor because people alight here to go to the Central Railway Station. If buses take the Palayam and Pettah and enter the highway to reach Eenchakkal. Those who wish to go to Thampanoor and East Fort will have to alight at Palayam. Else, the buses will have to be redirected to Ulloor. The authorities concerned should take steps to avoid congestion on the arterial roads.

Bumpy ride

Sir, — The road from Kallambalam to Varkala has been recently tarred. It is quite wide but there are a few bumps on the road. The absence of zebra markings and sign boards near the bumps make driving hazardous. Varkala is an important tourist location. It is sad that the Government has given scant regard to installing signboards and making things easier for motorists.

Hemakumari,
