dated December 14, 1954: PSP Ministry not to resign

There will be no immediate resignation by the PSP Ministry in Travancore-Cochin on the basis of the Congress decision to discontinue its support to it. The Ministry will face the Legislature, scheduled to meet on January 25, and will resign if it suffers defeat on any important question. Mr. Pattom Thanu Pillai, Chief Minister, told pressmen in Trivandrum on December 13 that the Ministry did not propose to resign on the basis of the resolution adopted by the Congress Party on December 12. It would resign if it were defeated in the Assembly on a confidence vote or any other important policy matter. The Chief Minister said he had not considered the question of "tolerating" a Ministry formed by Communists. He said this when his attention was drawn to a statement, credited to the General Secretary of the State PSP, to the effect that the PSP would be willing to support the Communists if they formed an alternative Ministry. Replying to another question, the Chief Minister said the PSP wished to avoid President's rule.
