A TV grab taken from a video shows masked Hamas militants preparing explosives in a tunnel near Rafah on Sunday. AP
MANAMA, DEC. 13. Miliitants belonging to the Hamas and a faction of the Fatah, in a joint operation late on Sunday, killed five Israeli soldiers and wounded another six. A blast in a booby trapped tunnel, beneath an Israeli post caused the casualties. The incident took place near Rafah in the Gaza Strip that borders Egypt. Palestinian media quoted Hamas as saying the tunnel was nearly 250 metres long, and around 1.5 tonnes of explosives were used. Israeli officials said the attack would evoke a `measured' response, but a full-scale ground operation was not envisaged. In an apparent initial response, helicopters fired six missiles at targets in Gaza City early on Monday, hours after the Rafah attack. No casualties have been reported from the strike so far.
Pulls out of race
The jailed Palestinian leader, Marwan Barghouti, has dropped out of the race for Palestinian Authority President after reiterating that the leadership should not abandon the armed struggle for an independent State. In a letter, he said he supported Mahmoud Abbas. Mr. Barghouti's wife Fadwa announced his withdrawal from the January 9 elections at a press conference on Sunday. Ahmed Ghanem, member of the steering committee of the Fatah, said Mr. Barghouti had earlier wished to highlight that "the election is taking place under occupation." Recent opinion poll ratings showed that Mr. Barghouti and Mr. Abbas were running neck and neck in the contest. Mr. Barghouti said he had listed 18 demands, which he expected the leadership to fulfil. They included adherence to an armed Intifada and resistance to Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.
