BELGAUM, DEC. 13. Eight dacoits stopped at least three lorries and looted the crew of cash and other valuables around dawn near Prabhunagar on Belgaum-Goa National Highway 4A. A jeweller's shop at Peeranwadi on the road was also burgled. The owner of the shop, Amit Neelkant Killekar, who registered a complaint with Belgaum Rural Police Station, claimed that gold and silver ornaments worth Rs. 95,000 were missing. On Sunday morning, a house of a senior Army Officer in the Camp (cantonment) area was burgled when the family was away. The valuables missing included gold and silver ornaments worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs and silk saris worth Rs. 25,000. A complaint has been registered by the Camp Police. Today morning, the dacoits waylaid a lorry near Prabhunagar and assaulted Shankar, its driver, when the latter refused to hand over the cash. However, the culprits snatched away Rs.16,700 in cash from Mr. Shankar and escaped in the dark. Earlier, the gang waylaid two lorries in the same stretch and robbed Rs. 5,000 from each of the crewmembers. Mr. Shankar has been admitted to the district hospital here in the city. The Khanapur Police have registered a case. Eight dacoits looted two petrol pumps and killed a person near Nippani on National Highway 4 in November. The Additional Director-General of Police (Crime), M.K. Srivastava, who rushed here from Bangalore, had sought the cooperation of the Kolhapur Police in Maharashtra in nabbing the dacoits.
