CHENNAI, DEC. 13. The India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) will soon begin sound and light shows in Kanyakumari, Madurai, and Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu. M.L. Jain, vice-president, Ashok Travels and Tours - Ashok Reservation and Marketing Services (ARMS) - of the ITDC, told The Hindu here today that the shows would be staged at the Mamallapuram shore temple, Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai and the Rock Temple at Kanyakumari. "The scripts for this new tourist attraction are in the final stages of preparation and out of the three places in Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari will be the first one to start the show in the next two or three months," Mr. Jain added.
Infrastructure
The ITDC is gearing up to woo global tourists to lesser-known destinations by appealing to the State Governments to improve infrastructure. The focus is on popularising Indian handicrafts and confectionaries in all its 23 duty-free outlets besides holding special expositions. "We have planned an all-India handicrafts expo in Chennai on January 15 coinciding with Pongal," Mr. Jain said. While new point-to-point package tours are being launched in the States, Mr. Jain said efforts were now underway to make ITDC a single destination travel shop providing all travel related services under one roof.
