Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, Dec 13. Villagers shot dead a police constable and injured another in the early hours today after mistaking them for dacoits, leading to the arrest of 24 people -- three of them ``wanted'' criminals. Police said trouble began when a police party from Manjhanpur in Allahabad had come to Purbuzurg village in a private vehicle to arrest three wanted criminals. During their raids in which they nabbed the criminals, their family raised a false alarm screaming that the policemen were dacoits. At this, a large number of villagers gathered around and started beating up the personnel despite their entreaties. One man shot at them using a countrymade pistol, killing Ravindra Kumar Tiwari (40) and critically injuring another constable, police said. The residents said they ignored the pleas because several dacoits had earlier been to their village in police uniforms. Amid the confusion, the nabbed criminals managed to escape, police added. Senior police officials who reached the site, rescued the other policemen, and admitted the injured constable to hospital. The arms looted by the villagers were recovered. Police, after lodging a case against 25 residents including the village chowkidar and the three criminals in connection with the incident, arrested all but one of them. -- UNI
