LUCKNOW, DEC. 13. The Uttar Pradesh government today fixed the minimum support price for sugarcane for the current crushing season at Rs 107 and Rs 112 per quintal. The price decided at a state cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav was Rs 12 higher than the last year's prices of Rs 95 and Rs 100, V K Mittal, the Chief Secretary of the state, told newspersons here. The rates for the early variety has been fixed at Rs 112 per quintal, Mittal said. The new cane prices fixed by the state government will be applicable on all the sugar mills in the state including the private sugar mills. The move will benefit about 20 lakh cane growers. The chief secretary also said that the state government has decided to extend bank guarantee of Rs 1,110 crores for the sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mill Federation and Rs 587.3 crores for the sugar mills of UP Cooperative Sugar Mills. To a question, Mittal said that cane dues worth Rs 41.76 crores were still pending on the private sugar mills while the sugar mills of the federation and cooperatives have cleared their dues. -- PTI
