HYDERABAD, DEC. 13. All political parties, barring the Congress, threw their weight behind the Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) today demanding a halt to the process of filling vacancies in the Government until Parliament gave its nod for categorisation of the Scheduled Castes. At a public meeting and rally opposite the Indira Park here on Monday, leaders of the TDP, the BJP and the CPI promised support to the Madigas in their endeavour to get back categorisation. Thousands of MRPS activists thronged the venue throwing traffic out of gear in the heart of the city. The leaders expressed willingness to be part of an all-party delegation to New Delhi to meet the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, and garner support of other political parties. The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, said though the Supreme Court had struck down the sub-classification on a technical point, it was the social responsibility of every political party to fight for a law. He recalled how the TDP had paved the way for categorisation by appointing a commission and later approaching the then President, K.R. Narayanan.
Madigas' lot
The MRPS founder-president, Manda Krishna, said the Supreme Court's verdict had put paid to their efforts of the last six years to render justice to the Madiga sub-caste. Since 2000, when the then TDP Government approved categorisation, the lot of Madigas had begun to improve. He said the Madigas would fight till legislation was passed in Parliament. Until then it was only fair for the Congress Government to keep the process of recruitment in abeyance, he said. He lashed out at the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for directing the police to prevent people from attending the rally.
