NEW DELHI, DEC. 13. The Janata Dal (Secular) president and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, today defended the coalition Government in Karnataka in which his party is a partner. He said those criticising the Government should realise that it put the State on the path of development. He ruled out his party pulling out of the coalition.
Clearance to IT projects
Mr. Deve Gowda told presspersons here that it was during his tenure as Chief Minister that plans for the first Information Technology park were cleared, the Rs. 200-crore ring road project was given the green signal, and a 10-year tax holiday was announced. "Even though I am a dhotiwallah, I gave clearance for IT projects. I am a civil engineer... I have neither forgotten the rural poor nor ignored urban development," he said while responding to comments that he was more concerned with those in rural areas.
Devanahalli airport
About the Bangalore international airport proposed at Devanahalli near Bangalore, he said the project had made little progress eight years after he had demitted office as Prime Minister. Asked about his criticism of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, for holding a press briefing in Delhi, Mr. Deve Gowda said there was no need for the Chief Minister to rush to the Capital and explain. "Where was the need to react to reports that appeared at the instigation of some people," he asked.
Enough facts
The former Prime Minister said he had enough facts on all the issues and would place them at appropriate time inside and outside Parliament. He refused to comment on the reported remarks of Maharashtra Governor, S.M. Krishna, on the functioning of the Karnataka Government. "I do not want to criticise a Governor, as a former Prime Minister I have to follow a code of conduct," he said.
Ministry expansion
About the ministry expansion, Mr. Deve Gowda said senior leaders of his party would meet shortly to finalise the list of aspirants to be inducted. He ruled out the Janata Dal (Secular) coming out of the coalition.
Issue-based campaign
The Janata Dal (Secular) would carry out an issue-based campaign in various States such as Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka, he said. The party would contest for a few seats in the Assembly elections in Haryana and Jharkhand, he added.
