Online banking facility

TIRUPATI: Core banking solution (online banking) was introduced at Union Bank of India here on Monday, making it the 502nd branch in the country to have the facility.

The bank has planned to bring 19 branches in Vijayawada region into the network by March 2005. Plans are afoot to link to the network the branch proposed in TTD's Srinivasam complex.

Student body appeal

NELLORE: The district unit of the Dalit Vidyarthi Sena has urged the Government to introduce journalism courses in Nellore district, since it has got local editions by some newspapers.

In a statement issued here on Monday, the Sena's president, A. Poorna Prakash, said providing such an opportunity would go a long way in encouraging the field of journalism. The Sena also requested the Government to provide for post-graduate courses in Ambedkar Open University and scrapping of fees for students of weaker sections of society.

MPP meet held

NELLORE: The mandal parishad meeting of Kavali, held on Sunday, unanimously resolved to go in for a shopping complex in the compound of the parishad building, to attain economic self-sufficiency. It was resolved to go in for a seven-shop complex in initial stage. At the meeting, the main emphasis was on drinking water supply to tail-end areas of the town.

Youth electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: A 16-year-old youth, Pamuleti, was electrocuted while watering paddy fields in Nayanapalle in Kasinayana mandal on Sunday evening and his 40-year-old father sustained injuries in a bid to rescue him. The youth died on way to Porumamilla Government hospital, according to the police.

NELLORE: A State-level conference of panchayat raj institutions, is slated to be held at Nellore on December 16, at Town Hall, Nellore. The convention is to demand 'restoration' of full powers to the local bodies, to make them more purpose oriented.

One hurt in group clash

NELLORE: One person received injuries and some others suffered bruises, following a clash between two groups in the dalitvada of Vakadu mandal. The incident was said to be due to a petty quarrel and both parties have complained to police.

Old man ends life

NELLORE: Dejected with ill health, a 70-year old man allegedly set himself ablaze in Balakrishna Reddy Nagar of Kavali mandal. It was stated that the deceased, P. Bapaiah, had been living with his eldest son, but was feeling depressed due to poor health and took the extreme step.

7 hurt as powerhouse lift gives way

KURNOOL: Seven casual labourers were injured when the lift in the left bank powerhouse at Srisailam collapsed on Monday. According to reports, the lift came down crashing from the fourth floor causing injuries to the labourers. The mishap occurred when bearing shaft of the lift broke down. The labourers were rushed to NIIMS, Hyderabad. Officers were investigating whether there was any negligence in maintenance of the lift.

GO issued on teachers' salary

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders directing that salaries of mandal and zilla parishad teachers be paid through treasuries with effect from April 2005. GO 713 was issued by the Finance Department on December 10, according to a press release issued by the Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers Union here. B. Mohan Reddy, president, and P. Sudhakar Reddy, general secretary, said the Supreme Court hearing in the case on teacher service rules, which came up on Monday, had been adjourned.

Somasekhara panel sittings

HYDERABAD: The B.K. Somasekhara Commission looking into the Yeleru scam will hold regular sittings from December 15 to 31 at its office located in the second floor, National Hydrology Project Office, Chintalbasti, here. The timings will be 12 noon to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The commission will have holidays on December 19 (Sunday), 25 and 26, according to an official release.

Three women commit suicide

KURNOOL: Three women committed suicide in the district on Monday. Sunkulamma and Adilaxmi consumed poison at Chintalayapalli in Kolimigundla mandal and died on their way to hospital. Domestic problem was said to be the cause of suicide. Dhanalaxmi ended her life by consuming pesticide at Sundipenta in Srisailam. Failure in love was said to be the reason for the extreme step.

HIV-positive man ends life

NELLORE: A Tamil Nadu man, Sabu (30), committed suicide by hanging self in his house here after he was reportedly diagnosed suffering from AIDS. Sabu had not been keeping good health in recent times and his wife and children deserted him, making him depressed.

Naxal commander gives up

KURNOOL: The deputy commander of Mahanandi local guerrilla squad, Namala Bhaskar, surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, V.R.K. Mohan Rao, at Nandyal on Monday. Bhaskar joined the organisation in 1998 and rose to the level of deputy commander. He said lack of cooperation for naxalites in villages and ill-health forced his surrender. He said he would like to support his old parents. He was sanctioned Rs. 5,000 and promised another Rs. 20,000, a reward which he carried on his head.

Cotton farmer ends life

KARIMNAGAR: A cotton farmer, P. Tirupathi (22), committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Godishala in Saidapur mandal due to failure of crops and increasing debts on Monday. Unable to clear Rs. 70,000 debts, he resorted to the extreme step.

CCI to open 3 purchase centres

GUNTUR: The Cotton Corporation of India will open three new purchase centres at Piduguralla, Macherla and Vinukonda on December 15. Its officials have urged cotton farmers to take advantage of the centres to sell their produce.

`TIME Man' award presented

TIRUPATI: Subir Raha, Chairman, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), has been conferred the `TIME Management Man' award for 2004. The award was presented by Kavasseri V. Ramanathan, Professor of Accounting, University of Seattle in the US, here on Sunday. Pratap C. Reddy (Apollo Hospitals), Magunta Subbarami Reddy (Balaji Industries), Anil Epur (CII South India chief), Galla Ramachandra Naidu (Amara Raja group) and Arindam Chaudhari (Indian Institute of Planning Management, New Delhi) were among the recipients of the award in the past.

Former MLA's death condoled

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Monday expressed grief at the death of senior Congress leader and former Yelamanchili MLA, K.K.V.S. Raju (83), at Martur in Visakhapatnam district on Sunday. Dr. Reddy lauded the contribution of Raju to the development of the district as well as the State, according to a press release issued by the Chief Minister's Office.

Case against TDP spokesperson

KARIMNAGAR: The Karimnagar I Town police registered a case against the TDP official spokesperson, Eda Shankar, and others on Monday for misleading the police by lodging a false complaint about the `missing' of the Union Minister for Labour, K. Chandrashekhar Rao, from the district. J. Amarender Reddy, CI, said they had a registered a case under Section 182 IPC.

Irrigation engineer in ACB net

HYDERABAD: A Deputy Chief Engineer of Irrigation Department, M. Nagendra Rao, and his Junior Assistant, T. Hanumantha Rao, working in Nagarjunasagar canal office, were arrested by Anti-Corruption Bureau officials in Guntur on the charge of accepting Rs. 10,000 bribe from a retired employee for reimbursing his medical expenses. Both were being produced before the Special Court for ACB Cases, Vijayawada, according to a press release.

Two live landmines found

GUNTUR: The police found two live landmines on the kutcha road leading to Guthikonda Bilam along Sagar canal right bank, two km from the road point, in Guntur district on Monday. Communist Party of India (Maoist) workers had repaired the road to facilitate movement of vehicles carrying top naxalite leaders for the public meeting held at Bilam. The landmines were meant to blow up vehicles as there was only gelatine powder filled in them, the police said.

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: Dry weather prevailed in the State on Monday with no change in minimum temperatures. The lowest night temperature for the day was accounted by Medak at 12 degree Celsius. According to a Met Office forecast, dry weather will continue on Tuesday.
