Left calls for transparency in tenders process

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 13. Communist parties, while complimenting the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for his sincerity in taking up irrigation projects, have complained that the method adopted for processing tenders needed transparency.

Continuing the debate on the issue in the Assembly on Monday, Thammineni Veerabhadram of the CPI(M) and Chada Venkata Reddy of the CPI said transparency was essential in the wake of the doubts expressed by different quarters. The Government would have done justice had it cancelled the 21 major packages awarded to the listed nine companies, Mr Veerabhadram said. He contended that the TDP was criticising the process out of fear that the Congress would remain in power permanently if the proposed irrigation projects were completed. Mr. Veerabhadram said the Chandrababu Naidu Government had scrapped several welfare schemes and people had responded by voting the TDP out of power. He blamed the Telugu Desam for concentrating on roads and buildings ignoring irrigation and asked Mr. Chandrababu Naidu to change his `mindset' at least now.

The CPI(M) member came down heavily on the TRS leader, A. Narendra, for his objection to Polavaram and Pulichintala. He spoke against separate Telangana, saying development of backward regions was possible only in united Andhra.

White paper sought

He wanted the Dummagudem and Nagarjunasagar Tail-Pond projects be grounded immediately and sought district as unit for taking up irrigation projects. He demanded compensation to the displaced before taking up the project and sought white paper on irrigation projects.

Mr. Venkata Reddy wanted spending of at least Rs. 11,000 crores per year if the present irrigation programme was to be successful. He said the TRS came to limelight because Mr. Chandrababu Naidu had neglected irrigation.
