Alwar ex-MP back in Congress

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, DEC. 13. The former Member of Parliament from Alwar, Jaswant Yadav, has returned to the Congress Party after a gap. Dr.Yadav and his wife, Kiran Yadav, who is the zila pramukh of Alwar, were admitted to the Congress fold here on Sunday at Indira Gandhi Bhavan, the Pradesh Congress Committee office, in the presence of the PCC president, Narain Singh.

Dr.Yadav, who started his political career with the Congress, had won from Alwar on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket in the previous Lok Sabha elections. In the last Lok Sabha polls he was denied re-nomination by the BJP on account of certain allegations pending against him. The party fielded Mahant Chandnath but failed in getting him elected.

The rift between the State BJP leadership and Dr.Yadav widened when he was again denied a party ticket in the recent by-election to the Behror Assembly constituency. The BJP once again opted for Mahant Chandnath and proved lucky with him the second time.

Dr.Yadav who fought as an Independent came second in Behror leaving the Congress nominee to the third position.

After joining the Congress, Dr.Yadav castigated the BJP as a party of "dishonest'' people. The party had given tickets to a few persons after collecting huge funds from them, he charged. He alleged that certain leaders in the BJP had hatched a conspiracy against him in the past to stop him from emerging as a farmers' leader in the area. Along with Dr.Yadav and Kiran Yadav, their associates, Shivcharan Yadav, Rajendra Prasad Yadav and Mukesh Yadav also took membership of the Congress on the occasion. The return of the Yadav couple is seen as a prelude to the combinations and permutations likely prior to the panchayat elections, expected to be held early next year. As such Alwar had been one district were the Congress did well in the Assembly elections in 2003.
