TIRUPATI, DEC. 13. The local unit of Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Castes Welfare Association staged a dharna in front of the Ambedkar statue at RTC crossroad here on Monday, demanding extension of reservation to private sector. Following a directive from the Sate unit, the members, led by the president,P.Paramasivan, and the general secretary, P.Chengalrayalu, took out a procession in the town carrying placards. They expressed resentment at the hardship the SCs and STs wereut to in getting constitutional privileges with the advent of liberalisation and privatisation.
Welfare hostels
Apart from reservation in private sector, the dalits also demanded extension of social welfare hostels to all professional educational institutions and enhancement of annual income to Rs.2 lakh for eligibility of scholarships.'No' to dhobies. The meet gave a loud and clear "no"to the demand of some backward castes seeking inclusion in the list of Scheduled Castes. It may be noted that `Rajakas' (dhobies) have been demanding inclusion in the list. Speakers made it clear that however backward the castes might be, they could not claim a place in the list meant for socially oppressed and warned the Government against making any such attempt. The meet also demanded that quota be provided to dalits in allotment of shopping complexes by TTD, municipality and TUDA.
