`Arrest accused in rape case'

Raichur Dec. 13. Members of the district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a dharna here on Monday demanding the arrest of the accused in a rape case reported from Yerdona village of Lingsugur taluk last week.

The members led by K. Neela, member of the State Working Committee of the CPI(M), who staged a dharna on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's office, urged the Government to take steps to register a criminal case against the accused Rudrappa.

They submitted a memorandum to Thimappa, headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, urging the Government to meet their demands at the earliest.

Power shutdown

Bidar Dec. 13. Power supply will be disrupted in parts of Bidar and surrounding villages on Wednesday from 9 am to 5 pm. Change of breaker lines in the Kolar (K) 110 kV station will necessitate shutdown in the old fort city and areas supplied by the 33 kV stations at Kamthana, Janawada, Chimkod, Byalahalli, Mannalli, Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewage Board and Gemini Graphics premises, said a press release.

Compensation

Bidar Dec. 13. The State Government has released a compensation of Rs. 50,000 to the family of Shashikant Gyanoba who died when lightning struck him at Sonkera in Humnabad taluk on October 2.

The Hulsoor MLA, Rajendra Verma, handed over a cheque for the amount to Vijayshree, wife of the deceased. The tahshildar, B.L. Gote, Ashok Pukare, BJP Yuva Morcha leader, and others were present. The Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar, released the compensation based on a report by the Assistant Commissioner, said a press release.

BJP plea

Bidar Dec. 13. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has threatened to launch a State-wide agitation if work on Zaheerabad-Nanded Road is not taken up soon.

In a letter to the Public Works Minister, H.D. Revanna, the party's district unit President, Prakash Khandre, said the road connected Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. People are put to inconvenience because of the bad condition of the road. The Government should release funds for the purpose.

MANGALORE DEC. 13. The kalashabhisheka to a new silver chariot, built at a cost of Rs. 65 lakhs, was performed at Kadri Manjunatha Temple under the supervision of the Pejawar Mutt seer, Vishwesha Tirtha, here on Monday. The puja began at the temple with a homa early in the morning. Later, shatarudrabhisheka and prasanna pooje were held. The handing over of the chariot to the presiding deity was completed late in the evening.

Criticised

Belgaum Dec. 13. G.D. Nadaf, president of the State Bank of India Officers' Association, Karnataka, has expressed apprehension about the implications of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation (LPG) on banks, economy and agriculture in the country.

Mr. Nadaf was inaugurating the Belgaum Zonal Conference of the association here on Sunday. He criticised the Government and the managements for making the banks profit-driven. "This is reversal of nationalisation of banks done in 1969 to tap resources in rural and semi-urban areas," he said. G. Muthuswamy, association general secretary, in his keynote address, criticised the banks for importing technology and modern systems when they were available in India.

T.N. Perti takes over as GM

Bangalore Dec. 13. Trilok Nath Perti (in picture) has taken over as General Manager, South Western Railway. Mr. Perti joined Indian Railways in 1965 and was responsible for setting up the Jhansi Loco Shed, Bhopal Coach Repair Workshop as well as the Bhopal Division of Central Railway. He played a pivotal role in setting up overhauling facilities for diesel locomotives at Parel Workshop, Central Railway, in Mumbai. Subsequently he worked as Divisional Railway Manager, Varanasi. He was also Chief Mechanical Engineer, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works. An engineering graduate from Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Jabalpur, Mr. Perti had training in the U.S. and Canada in diesel locomotive maintenance. He was deputed as an expert consultant with the national railway of Zimbabwe for five years. He has been a member of the Territorial Army. He had been associated with many sports activities, Scouts and Guides and St. John's Ambulance service.

Central team puts off tour

Bidar Dec. 13. The Central team that was supposed to visit Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur and other districts from today to study the drought situation has postponed its tour. The team will visit the region from December 17 to 20, said a release.

Body of woman found

TUMKUR DEC. 13. The body of a newly married woman was found at M. Gollahalli on the outskirts of Tumkur city, on Monday. The police identified her as Nalina (19). The police have picked up three persons of her husband's family for interrogation. Nalina was the daughter of Muddamma of M. Gollahalli. She was married to Gangadhara (29) of Kambathanahalli three months ago. Muddamma in her complaint to the police alleged that her daughter was murdered for dowry.

Honour for P.S. Shankar

GULBARGA Dec 13. The Medical Director of Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College, P.S. Shankar, has been nominated as a member of the International Advisory Board of the 20th edition of `Davidson's Principles and Practices of Medicine.' Dr. Shankar is also a well-known teacher. According to a communication received by Dr. Shankar, the other members of the board of this prestigious publication are Nicholas Boon, Nicki Colleed, and Brian Walker of Edinburgh. Another leading medical personality, Lawrence Hunter, will be the Senior Commissioning Editor and John A. A Hunter will be the International Editor of the edition. Dr. Shankar is the only Indian on the board.

Appointed to JD(S) post

Bangalore Dec. 13. The President of the State unit of Janata Dal (Secular), N. Thippanna, has appointed K.B. Shantappa of Virajpet as General Secretary of the unit. He has been asked to organise the party in the State, a party press release said.

Gold Council wing sought

Bangalore Dec. 13. S.R. Mohandas Hegde, Vice-President, Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee has urged the United Progressive Alliance Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, to recommend setting up of a regional World Gold Council in Bangalore, which is emerging as a city of international importance. In a letter to Ms. Gandhi, Mr. Hegde said the council would prevent illegal trade in gold — entry of foreign gold into domestic market, mixing gold with other metals and piracy in the trade. He also called for declaring Bangalore, Udupi and Mysore as jewellery districts, establishing a national gold region in Bangalore which can attract investors in the jewellery industry.

Deadline may be extended

BANGALORE DEC. 13. The State Government is considering extending the deadline for retrofitting autorickshaws with LPG kit to June next, according to the Joint Commissioner (Transport), Mohammed Suleiman. At an event to inaugurate MINDA IMPCO kits for autorickshaws here today, Mr. Suleiman urged the autorickshaws drivers to be mindful of passenger safety while fitting the kit into the vehicle. The MINDA IMPCO kit costs Rs. 13,500.
