`Arrest cannot be compared with destruction'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 13. It is in the interest of national integration that elected representatives and their leaders make an issue when a place of worship is attacked, but the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, cannot be compared with the destruction of places of worship, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, said here today.

Responding to the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti's comment that the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, raised the issue of destruction of churches and mosques in Gujarat but was silent on the arrest of the Acharya, Mr. Karunanidhi said no one had tried to bring down the Kanchi Mutt. The Acharya was arrested on charge of murder. It was natural for leaders such as Ms. Gandhi to raise the issue of destruction of places of worship, he said, adding that Ms. Bharti was destroying communal harmony with her "irresponsible" speeches.
