Haryana, Delhi overcome initial setbacks

MUMBAI, DEC. 13. Haryana lost opener Sant Kumar in the last ball of the first over and two more wickets by the 21st, but thereafter sent the Goa bowlers on a leather-hunt in the three-day Elite Group `A' Cooch Behar Trophy (under-19) tournament match at the Bombay Gymkhana on Monday. Middle-order batsmen Mandeep Singh and Sandeep Singh were the architects of Haryana's recovery, finishing the first day with an undefeated 122 each and, in the process, raising 240 for the fourth-wicket. Mandeep faced 350 balls and struck 13 fours in his four-and-a-half-hour vigil while Sandeep, who spent 205 minute stay in the middle, was a little more enterprising, smashing two sixes and 16 fours.

The Delhi batsmen were in good nick against Maharashtra after opener Puneet Bisht fell leg before in the first ball of the match. The second-wicket pair of Rahul Dewan and Aditya Jain added 106 runs in 26 overs, after which Mayank Tehlan went after the bowling to remain unbeaten on 130 after 254 minutes, facing 151 balls and hitting 19 fours and one six.

The scores: Haryana 303 for 3 in 90 overs (Mandeep Singh 122 batting, Sandeep Singh 122 batting) vs. Goa.

Delhi 328 for 5 in 91 overs (Rahul Dewan 49, Aditya Jain 73, Mayank Tehlan 130 batting, Surya Azad 43) vs. Maharashtra.
