M.S.' voice will live forever: Prince of Arcot

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 13. The death of M.S. Subbulakshmi has left a vacuum in the hearts of the people, not only in India but also the world over.

Her voice will live forever, the Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, said in a message.

"M.S. was a person of wisdom and an institution by herself. She lived in great simplicity and piety, for which may God reward her suitably," the Prince added.

The secretary of Hamsadhwani, R. Ramachandran, said the world of music, and Carnatic music in particular, had been orphaned.

For M.S., music was therapy for the soul. It gave her peace, inner strength and a state of bliss, which she transmitted to millions of her listeners. Her melody, breathtaking range, chaste diction in the nine languages in which she sang, aesthetic and emotional appeal and inspiring bhakthi made her music transcend all barriers, he said.

The Sadasivams were an ideal couple with no attachment to wealth; they gave all their earnings to noble, social, religious causes and the helpless poor.

Hamsadhwani cancelled festival concerts scheduled for Sunday by way of homage to the queen of song, he said.

The All-India Democratic Women's Association president, Sudha Sundararaman, and general secretary, U. Vasuki, said in a statement, "Her record of selflessness is borne out by the support she extended to various causes and people in need."
