Three robbed of Rs. 44 lakhs

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 13. The employees of a private firm were robbed of a huge amount of cash by unidentified armed young men at Model Town in North-West Delhi today. The robbers first overpowered the employees, who were going in a Maruti car, and then forced them to drive all the way to North-East Delhi from where they escaped in their own vehicle.

According to the police, Shailendra Kumar (42), Ram Sharma (24) and Sushil Kumar (23), who work for a steel utensil firm based in Model Town, Amitabh Enterprises, had gone to the Model Town Branch of the Indian Overseas Bank to withdraw money this afternoon. They withdrew Rs. 44.1 lakhs from the Bank.

Around 3-15 p.m., when they were on their way back, two young men forcibly stopped their car near Chhatrasal Stadium in Model Town. The two men forced their way into the car at gunpoint and forced Sushil, who was driving the car, to take the route to North-East Delhi.

However, before going far, they dropped Shailendra near Aggarwal sweets at Derawal Nagar. Subsequently, they also dropped Ram Sharma after going some distance.

They then forced Sushil to take the car to a place in Bhajanpura. There, the duo got down from the car and fled from the spot in a red-coloured Maruti van, which did not have a registration number plate, along with the cash.

Nobody was injured in the incident. The police were informed about the incident around 4-30 p.m.

The police believe that the manner in which the young men carried out the robbery suggested that somebody had supplied them with the information about the three employees withdrawing huge amount of money from the Bank. It was also not clear if the duo had been trailing them in a vehicle or was waiting for the employees to reach Chhatrasal Stadium. The police were also baffled by the fact that the robbers had already parked a getaway vehicle in Bhajanpura and come all the way to Model Town to commit the robbery.

Police officials said they were investigating the incident from all angles and did not rule out the possibility of an insider being involved.

Meanwhile, a case of robbery has been registered at Model Town police station and further investigations are on.
