BANGALORE, DEC. 13. A 14-year-old boy, Santosh, committed suicide by hanging himself at the Remand Home in Madivala on Monday morning. The Nandini Layout police arrested him six months ago on charges of stealing covers of drainage chambers. Another boy who was arrested along with Santosh was released on bail recently. According to the Nandini Layout police, Santosh had run away from his house in Hassan district and got into bad company here. His mother died a few years ago and his father was an alcoholic, the police said. Following Santosh's death, residents of Madivala, under the leadership of the local corporator, Muniraju, staged a demonstration in front of the Remand Home alleging that torture by Remand Home officials had driven the boy to suicide. Though Santosh was to be released after 14 days, a Remand Home official had reportedly threatened him that he would be lodged there for another six months. Fearing that he may be made to stay there for long, Santosh committed suicide, it is said.. The Madivala police have registered a case. According to a senior police official, juvenile offenders are normally released after six months of stay in remand homes. The Juvenile Court decides the period of stay.
Two other suicide cases
Two other persons committed suicide in separate incidents in the city on Sunday. A labourer, Mohammed Shafi (32), ended his life by consuming poison at his house in Tippunagar in Chamarajpet. The reason for the suicide is not known, the police said. The Chamarajpet police have registered a case. A man committed suicide by hanging himself with a bed sheet at a lodge in Upparpet police station limits. The police said the body of B.R. Umesh (30) was found hanging in the toilet of one of the rooms in the lodge, located on Subedar Chatram Road. He had checked into the lodge on Saturday evening. The Upparpet police have registered a case.
