WASHINGTON, DEC. 14. The U.S. Republican Senator, John McCain, has said in an interview he has "no confidence" in the Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld, but said the President, George W Bush, can have the team he wants to. Mr. Bush recently gave the nod for Mr. Rumsfeld's second term. Mr. McCain is a critic of the administration and the Pentagon in particular the way the Iraq war is being conducted. A decorated Vietnam war veteran, he has long pushed for more forces there. "There are very strong differences of opinion between myself and Secretary Rumsfeld on that issue." Asked if Mr. Rumsfeld was a liability to the Bush administration, he said: "The President can decide that, not me." A senior member of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee, Mr. McCain has said he believed the U.S. would be in Iraq militarily for many years which would not be a problem for Americans.
