Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, DEC. 14. The Chief Minister of Pondicherry, N. Rangasamy, said he was confident the Planning Commission would earmark more funds for the Union Territory in 2005-2006. He is scheduled to push Pondicherry's case at a meeting with the Deputy Chairman of the Commission in New Delhi soon. Laying the foundation for the Rs. 1.27-crore projects for construction of overhead tanks in Tiruvandarkoil, Kalitheerthalkuppam and Madhagadipet villages in Mannadipet Assembly constituency near here on Monday, Mr. Rangasamy said his Government had given priority for infrastructural projects such as roads and drinking water to the rural areas. He said a desalination project would also be launched soon to augment water supply in areas where the groundwater was salty. Thirty-one overhead tanks had been constructed and 10 more were being built to provide potable water to the villagers. Twenty-six new tanks would come up next year to ensure better availability of drinking water in villages. Mr. Rangasamy said the plan outlay of Rs. 461 crores earmarked for Pondicherry by the Centre in 2003-2004 were almost fully utilised, a fact which the Planning Commission took into account in raising allocation for the current year to Rs. 615 crores. He said dhotis and saris would soon be distributed to the poor. The garments will be sourced from the cooperative societies. Mr. Rangasamy said that all the 65,000 huts in the Union Territory of Pondicherry would be converted into concrete structures in a phased manner and each poor family was sanctioned a subsidy of Rs. 40,000 to raise the structures replacing the huts. He said fresh posts were being created and vacancies being filled up to tackle joblessness. An India Reserve Battalion sanctioned by the Centre for Pondicherry, would soon recruit 745 constables. The Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Board and MLA, P. Angalan, said the Tirubuvanai reserved constituency, which he represents in the Assembly, had progressed thanks to the positive response from the Chief Minister on developmental schemes.
