NEW DELHI, DEC. 14. The Centre today held discussions with representatives of professional colleges, deemed universities, minority institutions and State Governments on the proposed legislation governing admissions to professional courses from the next academic year. The meeting chaired by B.S. Paswan, Secretary, Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, was attended by 44 representatives.
`MGR formula'
The president of the Association of Self-Financing Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu, Jeppiaar, told The Hindu that he pleaded for incorporating the `MGR formula' in the proposed legislation by which 50 per cent of the seats in a non-minority college would be filled under the Government quota and the remaining 50 per cent under the management quota. He said for minority institutions, the percentage should be fixed at 70 per cent seats in management quota and 30 per cent for Government quota seats. The president of the All-India Medical and Engineering Colleges' Association, T.D. Naidu, pleaded for incorporating a provision in the legislation to allow the Association to hold a national-level common entrance test for filling seats under the management quota.
