VELLORE, DEC.14. A.P.N. Giri, a Delhi advocate representing Yogendra Kumar Tiwari, a "devotee" of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, could not meet the Acharya here today. He had came to meet the Acharya in the Central Prison on a direction from the Supreme Court. He waited in vain as there was no response to his petition seeking to meet the Acharya. Talking to newspersons outside the prison, Mr. Giri said that the apex court had ruled that the petition could not be entertained without the Acharya's valid authorisation. Hence, he came to the jail here. Asked whether a habeas corpus petition was necessary for a person who was in judicial custody, and was not missing, Mr. Giri said that such a petition could be filed even to seek the production of a person who was in "illegal detention." Mr. Giri later filed a petition before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Vellore, seeking permission to meet the Acharya. But it was returned on the ground that any action on the petition lay within the jurisdiction of the Prison Superintendent.
