HYDERABAD, DEC. 14. The Government has decided to release shortly 5.38 lakh new LPG gas connections under the Deepam scheme. Informing it to the Assembly during question hour on Tuesday, the Minister for Civil Supplies, G. Vijayarama Rao, said there was no move to change the name of the Deepam scheme. He denied the charge that the scheme would be scrapped. Telugu Desam members, led by the Leader of the Opposition, N. Chandrababu Naidu, insisted that the Government give a reply whether the Government would extend subsidy on cooking gas cylinder to BPL families. The Minister evaded a direct reply but maintained that new connections would be issued. Mr. Naidu charged the Government with failure to extend Rs. 100 subsidy on each gas cylinder as promised by the Congress during its election campaign. Poor families were unable to use gas cylinder owing to frequent price rise, he pointed out. Failing to get a satisfactory reply from the Minister, Mr. Naidu said the TDP was lodging a protest against the `adamant attitude' of the Government.
Devadula project
The Minister for Major Irrigation, Ponnala Laxmaiah, said Rs. 400 crores had been allocated for the Devadula lift irrigation scheme for 2004-05. The Minister for Finance, K. Rosaiah, said that 1,000 regular posts of doctors would be filled soon.
