It is murder: Lalu Prasad

CHANDIGARH, DEC. 14. The Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, has called the collision between the Jammu Tawi Express and the Jalandhar-Pathankot Diesel Multiple Unit near Mukerian in Punjab as "murder" and ordered "appropriate action" against the erring officials.

Talking to reporters at the accident spot, Mr. Lalu Prasad said that strict action would be taken against the guilty. The Railways did not require such persons whose negligence had resulted in the loss of so many lives.

Case registered

On Mr. Lalu Prasad's directions, a case under section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code, for culpable homicide, has been registered at the Mukerian police station.

The Minister is said to have ordered the immediate suspension of the station masters at Chak Kalan and Bangar, while action against more people is expected following a probe, which has been entrusted to the Railway Commissioner (Safety).

Relief announced

Mr. Lalu Prasad, who was accompanied by the Railway Board chairman, R.K. Singh, and other senior officials, supervised the relief and rescue operations and also visited the injured at Mukerian and Pathankot.

He announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the next of the kin of each dead and Rs. 15,000 each to the grievously injured and Rs. 5,000 to those who suffered simple injuries.

Helpdesks and special lines have been set up in the New Delhi, Jalandhar and Ahmedabad railway stations.

Additional relief

The Punjab Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh, along with the Speaker of the Assembly, Kewal Krishan, who is a Legislator from Mukerian, reached the spot. Capt. Singh announced an additional relief of Rs. 1 lakh for the deceased. He also announced that the State Government would bear the expenditure of those injured.
