KOLLAM, DEC. 14. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, today expressed concern over the alarming rise in fatal traffic accidents in the State. Inaugurating the new building for the Kollam city traffic police, he said serious measures by all concerned has to be implemented for brining down the accident figures. He called upon the police, the Public Works Department and the Motor Vehicles Department to join hands in effecting measures to bring down the accident rate. There should be a proper and comprehensive study on the cause of the accidents and suitable changes should be effected without delay. He informed that the Government intends assessing the causes of each accident for the purpose of effecting corrective measures. The State was giving top priority for the modernisation of the police department, he said. The Police Department was functioning under heavy limitations. More facilities are needed. Thus more projects for the police force are being implemented and many such projects have the financial backing of the Central Government. The new building for the Kollam traffic police station is part of this programme, he said. The Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, presided.
