NCC team back from Singapore

NEW DELHI DEC.14. A delegation of the National Cadet Corps comprising two officers and eight cadets visited Singapore under the Youth Exchange Programme of NCC from December 3 to 12.

The delegation today called on Major-General Rakesh Dass, who welcomed them back and lauded their efforts in bringing glory to the country.

During their visit, the cadets participated in the International Cadet Exchange Programme along with cadets from Australia, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States. The cadets visited the Naval Diving Unit, Changi Chapel, Singapore National Museum and Merlion Park.

Call to empower women

NEW DELHI DEC.14. The Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, B.L. Joshi, today said that the women should be empowered through vocational entrepreneurship. He was addressing the 37th Convocation of the South Delhi Polytechnic for Women. The Governor of Haryana and President of the Vocational Education Society, A.R. Kidwai, presided over the function.

Mr. Joshi said equal participation of women in national-building and its onward progress would be possible only if employment opportunities were generated for them. "There is an urgent need to provide varied and suitable entrepreneurship options to women from different cultural and economic backgrounds. There is a need to constantly survey the nature of demands in the job market and upgrade the vocational courses. New modules of modernity should be incorporated into the education imparted to them," added Mr. Joshi.

Mr. Joshi gave away diplomas to students with distinctions. Later he inaugurated an exhibition titled "Applied Art and Design" put up by the students.

Bhavan's students excel

NEW DELHI DEC. 14. Raghav Jha, a Class V student of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Public School, New Friends Colony, won the gold medal at the Fifth North India Martial Art Championship 2004, which was held at Talkatora Indoor Stadium on Sunday. Others from the school who won medals were Nowsheen and Neelkamal (both silver) and the bronze medallists were Moshin, Umar and Apoorvi Jain.

Annual day celebrated

NEW DELHI DEC. 14. Delhi Public School Vasant Kunj celebrated its 10th annual day this past week-end at the Air Force Auditorium in Subroto Park. A film showcasing the achievements of the past ten years was also screened.

The DPS Society chairman, Narendra Kumar, and co-chairman, Ashok Chandra, released a souvenir on the occasion. Prizes were distributed for academic brilliance and excellence in sports.

Meet on Russian language ends

NEW DELHI DEC. 14. A two-day international conference on "Contemporary Trends in Russian Language and Literature: Issues and Perspective" ended at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture this past week-end. The conference was attended by over 50 specialists from renowned Russian linguistic centres from India and Russia and was opened by the Russian ambassador here, Vyacheslav I. Trubnikov.

The aim of the conference was to provide a platform to the Indian scholars and experts for an interaction and exchange of ideas.

Cultural programme held

NEW DELHI DEC.14. The Ansal Institute of Technology in association with the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Among Youth (SPICMACAY) hosted a dance-cum-music programme highlighting the rich Indian culture and tradition at Gurgaon this past week.

While the renowned exponent of Mohiniyattam, Bharati Shivaji, rendered the traditional dance form of Kerala, Rehmat Khan Langa -- who is an All India Radio artiste -- presented folk music.

Phones to be transferred

NEW DELHI DEC. 14. Over 3,500 phone numbers with level 2242 of Laxmi Nagar exchange will be transferred to a new state-of-the-art main exchange in the area on Wednesday. However, the phone numbers will remain unchanged, but those subscribers with level 2242 and availing dynamic STD/ISD and phone plus facilities will have to re-register their secret code.

In case of any difficulty, Sub-Divisional Officer of the exchange can be contacted on 22451200.
