`Natya Kala Jyothi' title for Shylaja Ramji

CHENNAI, DEC. 14. Nothing can equal Carnatic music, the president of Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram, P.B.Sreenivos, said today.

Presiding over the inauguration of the 35th music festival of Sri Kapali Fine Arts here, he said all features of various forms of music were found in Carnatic music and artistes belonging to this school should be supported.

Encouragement

"The art flourishes only with encouragement," he said, presenting the "Natya Kala Jyothi" title to Shylaja Ramji, Bharatanatyam danseuse and disciple of Sudharani Raghupathy.

Adayar N. Lakshmanan, a Bharatanatyam `guru,' and Ms. Raghupathy commended Ms. Ramji for her accomplishments. N. Sundaraman, secretary, Sri Kapali Fine Arts, reading out the citation, said Ms. Ramji was given the title for preserving, propagating and enriching the traditional dance.

Thanigai Nagarathinam, morsin artiste, was given a cheque for Rs. 1,000 by the organisation.
