KOCHI, DEC. 14. The city police have registered cases against 42 persons on charges of drunken driving during a surprise combing operation conducted last night. The police also filed petty cases against 675 persons, 157 persons were fined and notices were served on 125 persons during the operation. This is the fourth surprise combing operation in the city in recent times under the instruction of the City Police Commissioner, Dinendra Kashyap. The number of cases registered last month was 121. During last night's drive, officers from Ernakulam, Mattanchery and Thrikakkara sub-divisions and traffic divisions participated. The drive was led by Martin K. Mathew, Assistant Commissioner of Police (City), A.R. Santhosh Varma, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Thrikakkara), K.P. Laila Ram, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mattanchery), K.E. Joy, Assistant Commissioner of Police (City Traffic - East) and S. Sasikumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (City Traffic - West).
More checks likely
More surprise checks would be organised in the coming days in view of Christmas and strict action would be taken against drunken driving, use of mobile phones during driving and overloading in two-wheelers, said the public relations officer of the city police.
Probe begins
The CBI started investigation against two laboratory analysts in connection with the shipment of more than 5,000 metric tonnes of methyl alcohol, which was declared as industrial alcohol. The shipment by the Coimbatore-based Trichy Distilleries and Chennai-based Template Sansar reached Kochi on September 29 and the consignment was moved to tanks. The ship was from Brazil.
