60 kids fall ill after mid-day meal

NEW DELHI, DEC. 14. About 60 students of a municipal primary school in Mundka were taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital this afternoon following complaints of dizziness and headache after they consumed rajma-rice provided to them as mid-day meal.

By evening, barring a few all the students were discharged from hospital. The condition of one student, Anil Kumar, of Class IV, is said to be serious. A resident of Prem Nagar Colony in Mundka, Anil's face had swollen and he was experiencing breathing problem, hospital authorities said.

Following the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, seized the food and samples were sent to a laboratory for testing. An inquiry has been ordered against Royal Caterers, which was given the contract for distribution of mid-day meal to the student.

Officials said the students complained of dizziness, headache and vomiting tendency after consuming rajma-rice. Those students who complained of nausea were taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in a police van. "We have ordered an inquiry," the official said.

Following the incident, the Leader of Opposition, Subhash Arya, alleged that the MCD had failed to ensure that quality food was distributed to students as part of the mid-day meal scheme.
