NEW DELHI, DEC. 14. Three persons, who along with a dismissed Delhi Police constable were trying to extort Rs. 1 lakh as protection money from an exporter, were arrested from Taimur Nagar in South Delhi by the Special Cell of the Delhi police this past week. While the dismissed constable is still at large, one country-made firearm and live cartridges were recovered from their possession. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Ashok Chand, a team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Norbu Tshering, received a tip-off that some criminals were threatening an exporter for extortion money. On December 10, the team found out that a criminal, Shamshad, and his accomplices would come to receive the extortion amount at Taimur Nagar in a white Maruti car. Subsequently, a trap was laid and the vehicle intercepted. However, the police could arrest only three of them. They were identified as Shamshad, Subhash and Mushtaq. Their accomplice, who fled taking advantage of the darkness, was identified as Virender Kumar, who is a dismissed constable. He was earlier posted with the Security division of the Delhi police. During interrogation, Shamshad disclosed that he was involved in at least eight cases of murder, attempt-to-murder, robbery, extortion and the Arms Act in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Shamshad shifted his base to Delhi about a year ago and started living at Badarpur. Recently, his accomplice, Mushtaq, informed him about a Taimur Nagar businessman from whom they could extort money. The accused made threat calls to the businessman and even went to his office to threaten him.
