NEW DELHI, DEC. 14. (PTI) Built with the aim of decongesting the capital's Tihar Jail, a modern, multi-storeyed jail was inaugurated here today.

The District Jail at Rohini in North-West Delhi, inaugurated by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, would house 1050 prisoners and covers an area of 12 acres.

Inaugurating the jail built at the cost of Rs. 14 crores, Ms. Dikshit appreciated its aesthetic design and said, "This is a welcome relief from other crammed jails where the prisoners are not even able to distinguish between day and night."

"This well-lit and ventilated jail will provide a peaceful atmosphere for the prisoners, which will help in reforming them into better citizens," she said.

With the setting up of two more district jails in Mandawali and Narela, the overcrowding at Tihar, Asia's biggest prison complex, would be solved, Ms. Dikshit said.

Built on a modern design, the new jail has a gymnasium and an open air theatre for use by the prisoners, besides ramp facility for the disabled.

The three-storied jail building also houses a modern kitchen, library, classrooms, medical ward and nine high-security cells besides ordinary ones.
