Fiji to choose Vice-President

SUVA: A high-ranking Fiji tribal chief who promotes better relations between indigenous Fijians and the ethnic Indian minority was nominated on Wednesday to become the South Pacific nation's next Vice-President. Ratu Jone Madraiwiwi, a liberal member of the tribal aristocracy and former Supreme Court judge, was expected to be approved by the influential Great Council of Chiefs to replace the former Vice-President Ratu Jope Seniloli. Mr. Seniloli was sent to prison for four years for taking part in an illegal government after a nationalist coup in May 2000. He resigned last month after his release from prison on health grounds after serving just three months of his sentence. The nomination of Mr. Madraiwiwi was announced after the chiefly council began a three-day meeting in the capital, Suva. Mr. Madraiwiwi has been outspoken in condemning the 2000 coup that toppled Fiji's democratically elected government and the nationalist motives of its instigators.
