In urban areas, women voters outnumber men

PONDICHERRY, DEC. 15. The summary revision of electoral rolls, carried out by the State Election Commission (SEC) for the civic polls in the Union Territory, has projected an increase of 3,799 voters.

The State Election Commissioner, R. Narayana, said that the SEC had conducted the revision from October 21 to November 6. The Electoral Registration Officers had finalised and published the voters' list for all 10 commune panchayats (five each in Pondicherry and Karaikal). The voter strength in all the five municipalities (Pondicherry, Oulgaret, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam) has also been finalised. In all the municipalities, women voters outnumber men.

In Pondicherry, of the total voters 68,761 are men and 72,447 are women; in Oulgaret the numbers are 70,107 and 71684; in Karaikal 19,490 and 21,231; in Mahe 11,183 and 14,779 and in Yanam 9,445 and 10,470.

The total voter strength in the five municipalities and 10 commune panchayats in the Union Territory is 6,39,790 (3,11,857 men and 3,27,933 women). During the Assembly elections, the voter strength stood at 6,35,991.
