Himachal Pradesh
By Our Staff Correspondent
SHIMLA, DEC. 15. Perturbed over the practice of some lawyers practising before their immediate family Judges in the Himachal High Court and other subordinate courts, the Himachal Bar Association once again met the Chief Justice of the High Court here on Tuesday. The lawyers in the State have been demanding that a policy be evolved to transfer such Judges to other high courts, said Shrawan Dogra, President of the Bar Association. Raising various demands relating to judicial accountability including the one for establishing a "National Judicial Commission", the lawyers here had also given a memorandum to the UPA Government at the Centre. They held wide discussions on "judicial answerability" with the CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Sitaram Yechury, during his visit here last week. In the memorandum, the Bar Association said: "We need a strong public campaign to put in place an independent and responsible body for appointment and removal of Judges". The lawyers here have also been demanding that one-third of the strength of judges of a High Court should be from outside the State.
