Army XI holds CoE

BANGALORE, DEC. 15. Centre of Excellence seemed all set to upset Army XI in the Deccan Herald Super Division league hockey tournament till the latter's M.S. Murum came up with the equaliser in the 64th minute. The 1-1 draw helped Army XI restore some pride. Earlier CoE's C.L Sen had put his side ahead with a fine effort in the 44th minute of play.

Army XI was patchy in its attacking and frittered away seven penalty corner chances apart from a number of weak finishes. CoE also had five penalty corners awarded and was unable to score of any of them. The match was played under floodlights.

Earlier in the first fixture of the day, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) coasted to an easy 3-1 win over Maharatta Light Infantry. Sandeep Michael slotted home a brace in the 8th and 18th minutes while veteran Ravi Naicker scored off the sixth penalty corner shortly before the break. BPCL had five more corners awarded in the second half but had eased off the pedal by then. Kalyan Bhengra scored in the 49th minute for MLI's only success. — Our Special Correspondent
