This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru said in the Lok Sabha on December 16 that the question of merger of the former French settlements of Pondicherry with any neighbouring area did not arise at present. It was only six weeks ago that the de facto transfer of authority had taken place in terms of an agreement between India and France. The next step was the ratification of the agreement by both the Governments, after which the de jure transfer of authority had to take place. The Prime Minister reiterated that the approval of the people of that area was essential before any constitutional or institutional change could take place.
