Asian Games
SINGAPORE, DEC. 16 . With just one round to spare, India eyes a big haul after eight rounds in the Asian Youth chess championships for boys and girls at the Taon Nan Auditoium here in Marine Crescent. Sai Nirupama and Abhilash Reddy are in the sole lead with 6.5 points each in the under-8 girls and boys' sections respectively. Sai Nirupama defeated Saduakassova of Kazakhstan with black pieces by employing her favourite g6-e6 system, developed by her coach. Abhilash Reddy downed Singapore's Chin Mathew from the white side of the Queen's Gambit's declined variation. Abilash who had the development advantage in a symmetrical position, converted his advantage into a smooth victory without much ado. In the same category, Shiven Khosla is in the second spot with seven points after his dashing 19-move win over Mohd Haikal of Singapore. Facing the Sicilian defence, Shiven opted for the aggressive Grand Prix attack and checkmated his opponent in quick time. In the boys under-10, N. Srinath and R. Prasanna Rao with 6.5 points each moved to the joint first position, after their resounding victories over Le Trong de Toan of Vietnam and Foo Benjamin of Singapore respectively. Rucha Pujari, who drew her game against Nyugen Tha Han of Vietnam, jointly leads the under-10 girls section along with Nyugen. Priyadarshan upset FIDE Master Chua Zheng Terry of Singapore. On the joint second spot is S. Ravi Teja with 5.5 points. Pon Krithika bounced from her early setback back with a fine victory over the previous round leader Docena Jedara of Philliphines to jointly lead the under-12 girls section along with Chaitanya Vattipali with 6.5 points. Meanwhile, in the Singapore Masters International Open being held along the Asian age group championships, IM Mark Paragua of the Philippines, continued to lead after an emphatic win over IM Situru Nathanael of Indonesia with the white pieces in a modern defence encounter.
