Cold wave conditions yet to hit U.P.

LUCKNOW, DEC. 16. The coldwave conditions and winter rains are yet to hit Uttar Pradesh with the western disturbances, which brings winter precipitation, not being strong enough in the State.

State MET office director K P Kulshreshtha told UNI here that the people of the state were yet to experience the real ``spine-chilling'' coldwave as the westerlies were not strong in the State.

``But with western disturbance not so strong over central U.P. this year, there is no major dip in the temperatures as expected during this part of the year. The weather continues to be dry and there is no fog,'' the director said, adding that a clear sky and good sunshine was sheltering people from a severe coldwave till now. Notably there has also been no forecast for rains which generally occurs during this time of the year, he added.

Mr Kulshreshtha said the temperatures usually dip by mid-December heralding a spell of coldwave. At present the minimum temperature of Lucknow was 12 degree Celsius only, while the maximum temperature of the city was 26.8 degree Celsius.

Last year, the State was colder during the first week of December and warmer in the second week, whereas this year, the first week of this month was comparatively warmer than the second week. He, however, expected the weather to be normal and hoped that the coldwave conditions would hit the State towards the end of this month as December and January are considered the coldest months in the State.

``During mid-January, the minimum temperature of the state capital comes down to 4 degree Celsius, forcing the people to remain indoors and the entire state reels under a severe coldwave by then,'' he said. The forest department said because of the comparatively low water level in the rivers, lakes and ponds as compared to last year, the migratory birds, particularly from Siberia, were not being seen in large numbers in the State.

Lack of rains has also affected the production of the vegetables resulting in an increase in their prices this winter season, sources said.

Businessmen dealing in woollen clothing too were eagerly awaiting the onset of the coldwave conditions, as sales are brisk during this period. But with the delay in the onset of winters their business too was below average for this period of the year. ``Normally during this time last year, the average sale of woollen garments is good, but this year we have hardly recorded ten per cent sales this year,'' a local garment store owner in Hazratganj area said.

Mohammad Aziz, a woollen goods dealer in the Mahanagar area of the city, said people had still not started purchasing woollen garments this year. - UNI
